The question is: where else but in the brain would we expect to find an activity that corresponds to beliefs, feelings of whatever sort, the absence of use of spatiotemporal information?
Unless one denies that the brain is the organ of mental activity, it is all natural to find that mental activity as is described in religious experiences can be "read" in the brain! As all kind of mental activity. It is not even surprising that coherent patterns of activation are found for analogous experiences and feelings.
Neurotheology seems to represent another case where brain imaging is scarcely informing.
Apart from the information that some people can be more prone religiosity beliefs not because of cultural and societal factors but because of how their brain is shaped; but what can we do with this piece of knowledge?

Nonmaterialist neuroscience is to neuroscience research on the neural underpinnings of mental activity what creationism is to the theory of evolution.

As such it has attracted the attention of neuroscientists that are engaged in neuroscience ethics and epistemology reflections, such as Martha Farah (see her: Neuroscience and the soul at file:///Users/elenapasquinelli/Desktop/Neuroscience%20and%20the%20soul.webarchive).

Neuroscience is not against religion, because it is science, and science just doesn't concern hypotheses that cannot be tested, such as supernatural beliefs. As evolution theories and astronomy, it is just plain science. Nonetheless, the fundamentalist attitude of some religious people who consider religious beliefs as forms of knowledge as justified as science (without sharing its methods, though) suggests that heliocentric theories of the Solar system are in opposition to the cosmology of the Bible (in this case, science wins and religion looses), that evolution theories are in opposition to the Genesis (again, science wins and religion looses), and, lately, that neuroscience views of the materialist underpinning of mind are in opposition to the very idea of a soul (and put in these terms, again: science wins, religion looses).

Religious people's life would be probably easier without fundamentalists, and without their unfair comparison with science.

In order not to be bothered by science, religious people could just consider the soul to be something else from the ghost in the machine that explains how matter can give rise to mind. It is true of science that ghosts in the machine are not (no more) necessary in order to explain human behavior, cognition, emotions, perception, motor actions. So, if the soul is tied to the ghost in the machine, well religion has problems; but if religions manage to keep it separate, then science will not be a problem.

Ghosts in the machine should not be confused with mentalistic, functional descriptions that are common in cognitive science and even in cognitive neuroscience.

While hypotheses framed as functional descriptions are still necessary, because of their explanatory and predictive power, functional descriptions do not describe ghosts but processes and mechanisms that have precise neural and biochemical underpinnings; only in many cases we do not possess a full description of these underpinnings, yet. It is possible that functional descriptions will be used and useful even when large databases of neural and biochemical underpinnings will be available. It is a matter of the level of analysis of facts, not a matter of ... matter. So, no dualism.

On the contrary nonmaterialists like neurosurgeon Michael Egnor (Brookhaven Memorial Hospital Center) are dualists: they believe we must posit the existence of a mind beyond the brain in order to explain facts about learning, thinking, and other cognitive functions.

They seem to ignore knowledge that is available from observations on how brain lesions alter mental functions, a kind of knowledge that has been available fro a while, well before recent developments in brain-imaging, the study of neuro-chemicals and neuro-genetics. Or studies on neuro-plasticity and its chemical underpinnings.

In particular Mario Beauregard, psychologist and neuroscience researcher (University of Montreal) tries to connect his dualists views to his scientific research on emotion control and neuro-feedback: Beauregard can't see how thought can produce material effects on the brain (measured through electrophysiological and other imaging techniques). This is, one could object, his problem. But Beauregard insists that since he cannot explain it on the basis of his knowledge in neuroscience (he would say: current knowledge), then a non-material mind is the only plausible escape from the gap. In reality several mechanisms have been introduced by neuroscience in order to explain how external events, and thought, can alter the brain - a general process called learning: from "fire together-wire-togheter" mechanisms, to long-term and short-term potentiation, to synaptogenesis and synaptic pruning.

It is true that dualist explanations are quite common, and according to psychologists like Paul Bloom they are the natural reaction of the human mind to this kind of difficulty. More in general, in the absence of knowledge, the human mind uses to put pieces of observation, fears, and hopes together and produce a nice narrative. Arguing the existence of non-material stuff from lack of knowledge is exactly one of the outcomes of this kind of natural habit - the habit of organisms that survive (at the evolutionary scale) also thank to their capacity of seeking for causes and patterns in their observations.

In any case, as for other costly explanations, the burden of the prove is to proponents. In the meanwhile, neuroscience can move on without bothering about religious preoccupations.

Belief in a Number of These Phenomena Is up Since 1990

In 1974 the philosopher Colin Radford stated a now-famous paradox about fiction and emotions – at least in the domain of the philosophy of esthetics :

a. In order to be moved by the fate of someone, one has to believe that this someone is real (to have an existence belief)
b. Anna Karenina is not real (no existence), and they know it (no existence beliefs
c. But people are moved by the fate of Anna Karenina

So, how can people be moved by things they know are not real?
Radford’s answer to the paradox of fiction is: people are irrational. In other words: their emotional reactions to fiction are not dominated by rationality and by what they know.
The paradox of fiction has raised a large debate, and naturally, alternative different answers have been provided as a solution :

- no, people are not irrational, they are just deluded : while they are reading or looking at the fate of Anna Karenina, they really believe she is taking her life ; so, they are victims of a big illusion : the illusion of reality (Anderson, 1998)
- no, people are not irrational, but they are neither fooled by fiction : they just are not really moved by Anna Karenina : they do as if they were, they make believe (Walton, 2001).

In recent years, scientists and philosophers like Richard Dawkins, Stephen Jay Gould, Carl Sagan, Sam Harris, Michael Schermer, Paul Bloom, Daniel Dennett, and others, have attracted our attention on another paradox, the paradox of weird beliefs.
The two paradoxes have much in common because weird beliefs concern non-existent things, just like fiction. The paradox of weird beliefs stems from the following conditions:
a. in order to embrace creationism, New Age, or other bogus movements, in order to buy healing pyramids and consult psychics that claim to talk with the dead, one has to believe that ghosts, visiting aliens and other weird things are real (existence belief)
b. ghosts, visiting aliens and the other weird things are not real (no existence), and one should know. At least we all have all the information available for knowing this
c. But a lot of people (about 40% in the USA) do believe in weird things

So,
- are people irrational (Americans at least)?
- are people fooled into believing weird things?
- are people just not really believing them, but somehow playing a game of make-belief of the kind : it would be nice if my poor aunt was still somewhere in the
sky and I could talk to her?

The three are true, somehow.

Yes, people are irrational, in the sense that human rationality is bounded: intuitions serve us no well, memory is fallacious, perception is illusory, we tend to prefer information that confirms our beliefs rather than challenging them, we tend to jump on a car after airplanes have been attacked by terrorists even if cars are by far more dangerous than planes, even in times of terrorism, we miss the big gorilla that points out in the middle of some ball passes.
In other words: there are reasons in the very functioning of human mind-brain for believing weird things.

Yes, people are fooled, directly and indirectly. Directly, by greedy or fool(ed) people who tell them that bogus stories are actually true, and by media giving space to bogus, with no critical appraisal. Indirectly, by a general lack of skeptical attitude and education, that becomes explicit whenever we are told that facts proved by scientific method are opinions - just like religion or the belief in Bermuda Triangle; that we should keep our mind open to things science cannot explain; that there might be other energies in addition to the ones described by science; that science cannot explain everything about the world; that a cousin or a friend of a friend has actually had that weird experience; or that Books say it.

Yes, people want to believe, maybe more than they actually believe. Certain beliefs are soothing, and fulfill desires, or protect from fears. They look desirable, even if they are not true. Moreover, human minds are not that coherent: many and different beliefs can coexist in fragments, that never meet, are never organized into comprehensive theories. It is when they have to use these beliefs in order to act that they come up with a narration, or when these partial beliefs, these fragments, are put in contact that people manage to find a theory, and eventually to shift from naïve to scientific ideas of how things work. Finally, human minds tend to search for confirmation to their beliefs, rather than disconfirmation.

These three mechanisms are simultaneously involved in the birth and growth of pseudo-science, myths, bogus explanations and hoaxes.
This is why fighting pseudo-science with science education and information alone will not work: the wish to believe and the mechanisms for creating beliefs from improbable facts are still there. One needs to figure out effective ways to train critical thinking, or the skeptical attitude. Being skeptical is different from being close to new evidence, or to new theories that promise to explain more than old ones; only skeptics do not accept claims on the basis of authority, but question them and ask for evidence that can prove and disprove them in order to consider them as more or less probably true. In other words, and citing Tim Minchin, comedian, skeptics are rightly open minded, but know that if you open your mind too much, your brain will fall.

But, why should we fight weird beliefs, at the end? Couldn’t we just let them be, and move on with science? Is it worth asking for education to put critical thinking and skeptical attitudes at the top of its priorities?

Some reasons for answering Yes follow:
- we are naturally curious, exploring, knowing organisms;
- we live in a world where science and technologies have amazingly developed, quickly: they can do a lot for making our life better, the life of all of us; but for that, we must massively understand what science is about;
- in other words: we are asked to take big decisions about the future of our planet, species, and fellow humans that depend on what we know about the world and humanity;
- we cannot trust our bare intuitions;
- we are in search for the beauty and the marvelous, since always; but we do not need bogus explanations for that: science is just full of beauty and of the marvelous (just like poetry, literature, music, art)
- understanding how weird beliefs and correct beliefs (science) grow will help us gaining a better knowledge of ourselves as more or less rational animals; in particular it will help us figure out how to increase our critical thinking, and to design good methods for training critical thinking and thinking skeptically. This will help us making taking decisions for life and in science.

Where does ignorance comes from?

1. Can information produce ignorance?
2. Can ignorance be the product of proposeful actions?
3. Can ignorance be the product of the normal functioning of the human brain?

These are some of the questions posed by agnotology: the science of ignorance.
Some quick answers:
1. Having access to information can lead to three types of "ignorance". First, having access to masses of information favors the falling on wrong information. Second, even when information is "correct", the fact is that one single study cannot count (in cases such as decision making) as good evidence. Picking just one information is ... cherry picking. Third, the fact of not finding information in such a large mass of available information can induce the (sometimes) false belief that the thing does not exist or at least that it has not been investigated (which is sometimes true). WARNING: we need to develop a literacy in information seeking and evaluating; science education can help, when it touches methodological issues.
2. Ignorance can be entertained on purpose in many and different ways: not studying something; covering the information under secrecy (Government's strategy), silence (put the results into the file drawer when they are negative), lies, or ... masses of information that is slightly related (Big Pharma's strategies); inducing doubt whereas evidence is solid enough (Big Tobacco's strategy). WARNING: attention not to fall into Conspiracy theories! Or to think that all what governments, science and technology to is to harm and lie!
3. Confirmation biases, resistance to change in case of cognitive dissonance, illusions, limtis of observation, rationality biases, especially those related to the appreciation of statistics and probability or risk evaluation, hindsight, wishful thinking desire for bettering, .... constitute a long list of mechanisms that help us entertaining misbeliefs, and make it difficult to integrate scientific knowledge in our daily life. WARNING: human beings have developed devices for controlling their biases in the search for truth; they are called "science" and "scientific methods"; they are in progress...

The study of agnotology - of why and how we stay ignorant or get mistaken - is fundamental in the framework of an evidence based and science informed living program.
The study of agnotology is connected to the study of scientific myths (psychomyths, neuromyths, ...): why they proliferate and resist to knowledge.

Genesi e diffusione di un mito

Un articolo del Corriere del 18 maggio 2011 mette, involontariamente, il dito su fenomeno curioso, a volte divertente, altre volte inquietante: la genesi e la diffusione di “miti” che riguardano la salute, il funzionamento della mente e del cervello, e più in generale i contenuti della ricerca scientifica. Chi si occupa di scienze cognitive prima o poi si sentirà chiedere, da amici di amici seduti a tavola, se è vero che usiamo solo il 10% del nostro cervello (no) o si sentirà annunciare che le scienze cognitive lo interessano moltissimo da quando ha scoperto che lui è soprattutto cervello sinistro e deve rinforzare il cervello destro (?). I miti sul cervello sono chiamati neuromiti e alcuni hanno un certo successo di pubblico, nonostante le sonore (forse non abbastanza da coprire il rumore di fondo) smentite di chi il cervello lo studia. I media hanno una parte non indifferente nella loro trasmissione ma, come altre leggende urbane (i coccodrilli nelle fogne di NY), i miti riescono a riprodursi bene anche nel semplice passa parola. Tipicamente a domanda su dove lo ha sentito, il trasmettitore di neuromiti risponde: l’ho letto da qualche parte, me l’ha detto uno che studia queste cose; esattamente come il portatore sano di leggende urbane l’ha sentito da suo cugino o è successo a un amico di un amico. Dal 18 maggio 2011 i trasmettitori italiani di miti sulla salute potranno riferire come fonte il Corriere, come i trasmettitori inglesi potranno citare il Daily Mail. Certo, non si tratta di giornali scientifici e une mente scientifica preferirebbe consultare un giornale di divulgazione scientifica prima di lanciarsi ad affermare che esiste una malattia chiamata elettrosensibilità che costringe i soggetti affetti a nascondersi dal mondo tecnologico o quanto meno elettrico in cui viviamo. E magari che questa malattia è provocata o aggravata dalle cure per una malattia terribile come il cancro. I sintomi? Molto vaghi, tali che chiunque in un periodo di stress puo’ facilmente riconoscervisi: mal di testa, irritabilità, palpebre arrossate, … (dovremmo forse arguire che è meglio evitare la medicina tradizionale che permette di affrontare il cancro e a volte di risolverlo per non diventare elettrofobi?) L’articolista del Daily Mail cita espressamente il fatto che la comunità medica riconosciuta non dà a questa malattia alcuna credibilità. Le sue fonti sono istituti che promuovono il dibattito sui danni delle onde elettromagnetiche, non istituti medici risconosciuti. La persona del Corriere che ha ricalcato l’articolo del Daily Mail non si è presa la briga di controllare - o di interrogarsi sull’opportunità di divulgare notizie allarmanti e di stabilirne le basi scientifiche. Non è sempre necessario fare ricorso alla scienza e ai suoi metodi di controllo e validazione. Tuttavia, quando si avanzano o citano affermazioni che si vogliono scientifiche e si fa uso di un gergo tipico della scienza, ci si inoltra su un terreno impervio. In scienza vigono regole, ci si sforza ogni qual volta sia possibile di condurre esperimenti controllati, e di usare tutti quegli accorgimenti che gli scienziati hanno sviluppato in anni di tentativi di rimediare ai normali bias dell’essere umano, che tende a cercare di confermare le proprie ipotesi, a sbagliare nelle proprie previsioni e a lasciarsi influenzare da paure e desideri.

«È vero che sul piano teorico il principio di laicità - scrive la Cassazione - è compatibile sia con un modello di equiparazione verso l'alto (laicità per addizione) che consenta ad ogni soggetto di vedere rappresentati nei luoghi pubblici i simboli della propria religione, sia con un modello di equiparazione verso il basso (laicità per sottrazione)». «Tale scelta legislativa, però, presuppone - spiega la Cassazione - che siano valutati una pluralità di profili, primi tra tutti la praticabilità concreta ed il bilanciamento tra l'esercizio della libertà religiosa da parte degli utenti di un luogo pubblico con l'analogo esercizio della libertà religiosa negativa da parte dell'ateo o del non credente, nonché il bilanciamento tra garanzia del pluralismo e possibili conflitti tra una pluralità di identità religiose tra loro incompatibili».

Ho scoperto, nell'ordine:
1. che esiste na laicità per sottrazione e una per addizione;
credevo che la prima fosse laicità e la seconda semplice addizione appunto di simboli religiosi; ma l'addizione di simboli religiosi non significa altro che: un Dio esiste, ognuno pensa di sapere qual è quello "giusto", e quindi noi li mettiamo tutti. Diciamo: un gesto rispettoso per molte religioni, ma non certo laico. Con un implicito naturalmente: che si affiggono simboli di religioni monoteiste e non, per esempio, i vari dei dell'Olimpo. Un premio al religioso che mi spiega la differenza, da un punto di vista laico, tra il Dio dei cristiani e Zeus, tolta la sconfitta storica, che non dovrebbe influenzare i giudizi dei credenti: la storia passa, il trascendente resta per definizione.

2. che l'ateo esercita una libertà religiosa negativa, mentre il credente una libertà religiosa positiva. E che quella dell'ateo è una identità religiosa, da conciliare con altre identità religiose. In pratica, il pezzo vuoto accanto ai vari simboli religiosi appesi al muro, è il mio Dio, il Dio dell'ateo e della sua religione negativa.

Questo significa una cosa sola: che la laicità non esiste in Italia, e questo a dispetto del primo articolo della Costituzione.
La laicità è in fondo un concetto di estrema semplicità, su cui si ricama apposta per fingere che sia complicato, e infrangerlo. La laicità coincide col fatto di lasciare a ognuno, singolo cittadino o comunità, il diritto di pregare chi vuole e quando lo vuole, di credere in chi o cosa vuole. Sono scelte che riguardano il singolo e non lo stato. Lo stato non si interessa delle singole private credenze dei suoi cittadini.
Puo' certo riconoscerne l'esistenza, ma in quanto stato queste non lo concernono. Da qui segue il fatto che, ovviamente, non esibisce simboli di credenze personali. L'assenza di simboli religiosi in luohi pubblici cola come una semplice, lineare, conseguenza logica dalla estranéità della cosa religiosa dalla cosa pubblica. Fine.
Non ha nulla a che vedere con la pluralità di identità religiose, o identità religiose negative. Certo che queste identità esistono (tranne quella religiosa negativa, per favore), ma queste non riguardano lo stato perché riguardano le credenze individuali e non la res pubblica. Non è una composizione tra pensieri religiosi. del resto, lo stato è laico (= non lo riguarda) rispetto a una massa di credenze e preferenze che riguardano i singoli cittadini: la religione, la squadra del cuore, il colore preferito, il miglior film della storia.

E non c'è in queste parole nessuna indignazione da "ateo" militante. C'è una profonda indignazione da filosofo militante che non tollera di vedere annodare concetti semplici in turlupinazioni linguistiche

Sul Corriere, un fantastico esempio di irrazionalità. Accade in una scuola, a un bimbo quanto meno turbolento.
Finché il bambino, che ha chiari problemi comportamentali, tira le sedie ai compagni e insulta, lo si sgrida.
Ma c'è una famosa goccia che fa traboccare il famoso vaso: un di' il bimbo (8 anni) bestemmio'.
Apriti cielo. altro che sediate ai compagni.
Che fanno le maestre? Gli lavano la bocca col sapone.
Certo, per chi crede alla transustatazione dello spirito divino nella mollica di pane, non deve essere troppo grande il salto logico e prettamente fisico che separa la parola sporca dalla bocca sporca.
E certo, gli avessero lavato la bocca col sapone per una qualunque altra parolaccia sarebbe stato altrettanto grave, e demente da un punto di vista educativo.
Checché ne dicano preside e genitori (tutti alleati nella santa saponosa alleanza contro la bestemmia) una maestra che lava la bocca col sapone a un bimbo di 8 anni è una che di educazione non ha capito niente. Punto.
Ma fa pensare che la deplorevole azione non sia giunta a sanzionare una parolaccia qualunque.

Come a dire: ci vuole proprio la religione per tirare fuori alla gente i comportamenti peggiori.

Naturalmente era uno scherzo. La festa di Natale si farà, checché ne pensino le maestre et qual che sia il loro progetto o la loro percezione di cosa vuol dire scuola multi-etnica (1/4 di bambini figli di stranieri).
Il comune di Milano, nella persona dell'assessore all'educazione, Mariolina Moioli ha saputo esprimere al meglio la propria incompresione dell'integrazione culturale:

«Ho contattato i vertici della scuola e si è deciso che la festa sarà fatta — dice l’assessore — ritengo che, a prescindere dall’appartenenza religiosa o culturale delle famiglie, chi vive nella comunità abbia diritto a partecipare pienamente alla nostre tradizioni. E la festa di Natale è un’ottima occasione di integrazione per bambini e genitori».

Tradotto: quale che sia l'appartenenza culturale di chi viene in Italia, questi ha il dovere di partecipare alle nostre tradizioni; cosa meglio del Natale per obbligarli a fare come noi e a comportarsi come buoni cristiani?

Il che ci permette qualche considerazione di ordine generale:
1. E' naturale che l'incontro tra culture ponga problemi di integrazione. E' anche lecito che una cultura che ha lottato per integrare valori di uguaglianza, rispetto e parità delle donne, laicità, difenda questi valori strenuamente contro coloro che li mettono in pericolo. Un esempio per tutti: l'infibulazione me la potete chiamare quanto volete una "pratica culturale che noi non comprendiamo". E' una pratica che va contro tutte le conquiste che l'umanità ha fatto in termini di vivere comune e di rispetto dell'altro (altra). Va al di là di qualunque cultura. E' una pratica, ma non è cultura: è incultura, punto. Il burqua è une partica inculturale, punto. Il velo delle suore, un'altra pratica inculturale, un residuo di un passato da superare. Il crocefisso nelle scuole, idem. Pratiche, non forme di cultura. Pratiche che stridono con i valori che la società occidentale propugna. Spariranno. Non c'è nulla da difendere in queste pratiche, soprattutto non in nome della cultura. Se quindi qualcuno mi dice che vuole poter praticare l'infibulazione in Italia o in Francia non vedo il minimo problema a dirgli di no, e a tirargli un pedatone nel culo. Il mio livello di tolleranaz culturale non ne risulta minimamente svilito.
2. Altra cosa è chiedere a une famiglia non cristiana (straniera o no, perché non è che siamo tutti cristiani in occidente, e i giornalisti di Repubblica se lo potrebbero ricordare) di cantare Tu scendi dalle stelle. Cioè, non di adottare un valore culturale fondamentale dell'umanità (diritti delle donne, laicità, etc. etc.), ma di sottomettersi a pratiche (sadiche ripeto: le canzoncine di Natale sono delle offese all'orecchio) in uso nel paese ospitante. Pratiche che sollevano problemi di integrazione perché non è neanche come mangiare il panettone, è piuttosto come chiedere a un musulmano per piacere di mangiarsi, per rispetto alla tradizione, una bella fetta di cotechino.
3. Insomma, quello che l'assessore Moioli ha chiesto ai genitori stranieri e non, non è di adottare i valori fondamentali dell'umanità (qualora ne fossero sprovvisti), ma di adottare le pratiche dei cristiani, che si vanno cosi' a sostituire ai valori fondamentali dell'umanità.

Le teocrazie, del resto, funzionano cosi'.

Non si sa se sia un artefatto di Repubblica o una vera folia italiana, ma a quanto pare, appena delle maestre agiscono in maniera sensibile e razionale decidendo di NON cantare canzonicine su Gesu' e Betlemme per Natale, i geniroti italiani entrano in crisi d'astinenza da cristianità.

Accade a Milano, è acaduto a Bolzano nel 2006 (Repubblica fa eco).

Le maestre non citano il fatto che le canzoncine che noialtri siamo stati obbligati ad imparare da bambini (e ancora ce le ricordiamo: spazio memoria del nostro cervello che poteva oggi ospitare la tavola degli elementi, interi canti di Divina Commedia occupati in maniera irreversibile) sono autentiche offese al buon gusto, poetico e musicale, quindi profondamente diseducative.
Citano semplicemente il fatto che nelle loro classi i bambini non sono PIU (toh) tutti cattolici.
Ci sono testimoni di Geova, and so on.

Come si fa a far cantare a tutti la stessa canzoncina a Gesu' e beata Maria che vergine lo partori' con l'aiuto dello Spirito Santo, dopo che un angelo le aveva parlato, e senza invece coinvolgere il legittimo marito che intanto fabbricava tavoli e seggiole?

La presenza di altre religioni pone quindi un problema etico alle maestre. Che non si sentono di imporre il Dio di Abramo e Isacco (quello dell'"uccidi tuo figlio", insomma) ai credenti in Allah.
I genitori del Dio di abramo e Isacco allora si sentono offesi: ma come, solo perché questi qua vengono a rompere le palle in Italia noi manco possiamo più cantare Tu scendi dalle stelle? Ah, bella roba, ma affondate le barche quando li vedete al largo. Riassumo e esagero (esagero?).

Onestamente, questa gente è talmente oltre la misura del razionale che non credo meriti risposta e considerazione. La storia li spazzerà via, o la storia d'Italia è condannata.

E' un altro il pensiero che mi disturba. Come mai si pensa solo a non offendere altre religioni e non si pensa:
a. a non offendere chi non crede in nessuna divinità
b. chi crede in una divinità ma non pensa che sia una materia scolastica e che è meglio che ogni persona faccia le sue scelte una volta arrivato all'età di poterle fare
c. agli effetti dell'insegnamento della religione nelle scuole su altri insegnamenti.

Sappiamo tutti quanto l'insegnamento delle scienze sia difficile, per svariate ragioni: insegnanti poco preparati (non per colpa loro, ma delle formazioni che ricevono), difficoltà intrinseca a vincere "naive beliefs" resistenti che occupano la mente di adulti e bambini e che sono del tutto naturali e non insegnati; difficultà a inventare dei metodi di insegnamento passionanti per materie difficili, che implicano impegno e sforzo; messaggi continui su quanto sia brutto fare uno sforzo o mettere impegno in qualcosa (non c'è bisogno di saper fare nulla per partecipare a una trasmissione TV).
La situazione dell'apprendimento delle scienze è già, quindi, un bel problema per paesi come l'Italia, che infatti nella recente valutazione internazionale dell'OECD si piazza sotto la media dei paesi OECD su tutti i criteri di valutazione (linguaggio, matematica e scienza).
Bello score.

Che c'entra la religione?
Beh, diciamo che non aiuta. Il suo influsso non è paragonabile probabilmente ai fattori che ho citato sopra, ma non si puo' non nominarlo per rispetto alla sacralità dei credo.
Come si fa a insegnare a un bambino, ragazzo, bambina e ragazza che Maria ha partorito vergine ecc. ecc. e poi spiegare la genetica? Ehi, a cosa devo credere?

Non penso che l'effetto sia lo stesso se a parlare di Vergine Maria sono i genitori (che ne hanno pieno diritto) o se sono gli insegnanti. La scuola educa sulla base di CONOSCENZE. Gli studenti sono tenuti a pensare che quello che accade dentro le mura della scuola ha a che fare con l'acquisizione di conoscenze. Se dentro queste mura convivono i serpenti che parlano, le vergini che partoriscono, la biologia molcolare e la chimica si rischia di fornire, implicitamente e in maniera difficle da sradicare, la falsa impressione che tutte queste idee sono dello stesso tipo e allo stesso livello.
Altro che Tu scendi dalle stelle: Messa da Requiem sulla scienza.
Prendiamo il caso della storia. Un genitore ha tutto il diritto di dire a suo figlio che i nazisti non hanno mai spellato le loro vittime per farne delle lampade, aperto camere a gas, trucidato milioni di esseri umani. La scuola no: si devve attenere a fatti e conoscenza, poi ognuno a casa propria approfondisce in direzioni a lui proprie.
Allora la scuola è obbligata a dirmi che le vergini non partoriscono, che i serpenti non parlano, ecc. Questa è conoscenza, ed è il mestiere della scuola. Segue, come conseguenza logica che la scuola non puo', allo stesso tempo dire ai suoi allievi che le vergini partoriscono e i serpenti parlano, senno' crea une CONTRADDIZIONE.

Nessun credo merita un rispetto tale da indurre contraddizioni nel proprio sistema educativo.

Fine della storia. A scuola non si canta Viva il Bambin Gesu'. Lo si lascia cantare a casa.

L'assegnazione del Nobel a Edwards è una festa meravigliosa: si festeggia un uomo che ha permesso la nascita di 4 milioni di bambini, ovvero che ha reso la felicità a 4 milioni di famiglie. Chapeau. Mi pare che il movimento per la vita dovrebbe fare salti di gioia. Invece no. Davanti a 4 milioni di famiglie a cui la scienza dà la possibilità di procreare, il Vaticano agita fantasmi di embrioni sacrificati. Sono cose che fanno riflettere, due volte.

Primo sul rapporto della Chiesa con la scienza. Secondo, sugli strumenti retorici che la Chiesa usa contro la scienza.

Il primo punto non è neanche troppo controverso: la Chiesa vota alla scienza una guerra che le è consustanziale. Credo religioso e scienza non sono compatibili, checché se ne dica. Lo dimostra il fatto che regolarmente, le scoperte scientifiche sono accolte dalla Chiesa con condanne. Perché la scienza fa avanzare la nostra conoscenza del mondo, e ci descrive un mondo che non ha nulla a che vedere con quello descritto più di 2000 anni fa dai suoi padri fondatori e poi dalle figure che ha scelto come riferimento. Più profondamente perché la scienza ci dota di criteri per decidere se una credenza merita di essere ritenuta o meno. E perché la scienza ci libera da pregidizi e ombre a cui si è risposto con misteri e fedi.

Mi sembra non ci siano dubbi su cosa, tra scienza e fede, la vincerà sulla lunga distanza. E il pensiero mi rasserena: assistiamo agli ultimi penosi ragli di un animale ferito a morte dalla storia, e destinato all'estinzione. Magari il processo sarà lungo ma tra Edwards e Ignacio Carrasco de Paula, ha vinto Edwards. Tra qualche anno la Chiesa dovrà abdicare a questa condanna, per non perdere altri consensi tra i cattolici, che vivono in questa storia, e non in quella di Sant Tommaso. Piano piano le crepe che la scienza le sta infliggendo saranno insanabili. Resterà il bisogno di mistico, di meraviglia (stati psicologici che hanno un correlato neurale preciso), di rituale (ben spiegato in antropologia). C'est tout. Ci fermeremo a meravigliarci davanti ai ciliegi in fiore, ogni primavera. Magari dei ciliegi OGM che fanno fiori blu.

Il secondo punto è meno ottimista. Naturalmente la Chiesa non puo' continuare a usare il Libro davanti al Laboratorio per convincere i cattolici che la scienza è il Male (senza per questo poter dire che la scienza è il Nemico che la distruggerà). Con qualcuno funziona (i Creazionisti, ma onestamente non sono masse). Ma non credo che la massa dei cattolici si lascerebbe convincere ad abbandonare la via di terapie che possono salvare loro e i loro cari da infertilità, Alzheimer, Parkinson, cecità, solo perché è scritto in San Tommaso che l'anima entra nel corpo al momento dell'impianto. Magari San Tommaso si sbagliava. Potrebbe dire un buon cattolico con il senso dello humor. Ma la Chiesa esercita da troppo tempo il suo mestiere per non sapere che in questi casi si fa leva sul senso di colpa, sul terrore, sulla morte. Sui buoni contro i Malvagi assassini. Hanno fatto le prove generali durante le Crociate, e gli son venute talmente bene... Oggi il nero Saladino è Edwards. Edwards che non ha dato la vita, ma la morte. Che ha osato far nascere figli anche grazie alla scienza

Questa retorica mi fa paura, e se ci pensate dovrebbe far paura a tutti. E' la retorica che invita a non pensare, a reagire con la pancia, a dare addosso al nemico senza guardare in faccia alle sue ragioni. E' fede, non si discute, non se ne puo' ragionare, è al di là delle ragioni, della ragionevolezza, della razionalità. Mi fa paura perché è la sola retorica che si puo' vendere a qualcuno per convincerlo ad avvolgersi nel plastico e a farsi esplodere in un mercato. O per convincerlo a impedire a chi non la pensa come lui di avere figli, uccidersi per non soffrire, cercare cure per malattie orrende.

La religione è nemica della scienza e della ragione, perché scienza e ragione sono destinate a smantellarla, lentamente ma inesorabilmente.
